Created around 1927, this rare advertising poster for BMW captures the spirit of early motorcycling through a striking vision of alpine adventure.
Two riders pause before a dramatic mountain landscape, one surveying the distance through binoculars while their motorcycle dominates the foreground. Rendered in bold blocks of blue, ochre, black and yellow, the composition transforms a machine into something more evocative: a symbol of independence, exploration and the freedom of the open road.
The poster dates from a formative period in the history of BMW motorcycles. The company's first motorcycle, the R32, had been introduced only a few years earlier in 1923, while the motorcycle depicted in this advertisement is believed to be the R42, a model produced between 1925 and 1928.
The original artist remains unidentified, although the composition is signed with the initials H.W. Surviving auction records date the work to approximately 1927 and identify the original printer as Kunst im Druck, München.
Beyond its importance as early automotive advertising, the image is an exceptional example of interwar European graphic design. The monumental motorcycle, geometric typography and simplified mountain landscape give the composition a visual strength that feels remarkably contemporary almost a century later.
